Apple announced a new iPad mini on October 26, 2026, with an OLED screen and an A20 Pro chip. Its immediate predecessor is the iPad mini with A17 Pro, introduced in 2024. The two tablets share a compact format and support the same two Apple Pencil models, but their screens, cameras, wireless hardware, and physical protection differ. This comparison is for someone deciding whether to order the new model or buy an earlier one.
As of October 31, the OLED iPad mini is available for preorder and is due to reach customers and stores on November 6. The details below are based on Apple's 2026 announcement, new-model specifications, and Apple's A17 Pro announcement. They are not a substitute for a hands-on comparison or an inspection of a used unit.

What changed at a glance?
The new iPad mini has an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, an A20 Pro chip, a thinner and lighter body, IP67-rated splash, water, and dust resistance, a landscape-edge front camera, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. The A17 Pro mini has an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD, a portrait-edge front camera, and Wi-Fi 6E. It does not carry the new model's announced IP67 rating. Both come in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage sizes and support Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C).
Those differences do not make every earlier mini obsolete. The more useful question is whether the new display, reduced weight, water resistance, or additional performance changes something you do regularly.
OLED versus Liquid Retina LCD
Screen technology is the most apparent difference. The A17 Pro mini uses an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD with 500 nits of stated brightness. The new model has an 8.5-inch OLED panel in a similar overall footprint, according to Apple. OLED controls light at the pixel level, so dark areas can appear black rather than illuminated dark grey. It is especially noticeable when reading with a dark background, watching video with dark scenes, or looking at high-contrast artwork.
Apple lists 600 nits maximum SDR brightness for the new mini and up to 1,200 nits peak brightness for HDR content. The latter figure applies to HDR highlights, not to the entire screen during normal browsing. The new display also offers a 1-nit minimum brightness and an optional nano-texture glass finish on the 256GB and 512GB configurations. Nano-texture may help with reflections in bright spaces, but it is a specific configuration choice rather than a feature on every OLED mini.
For someone mostly using email, web pages, notes, and ordinary ebooks, the older LCD can still be adequate. OLED's contrast and HDR capability become more compelling for frequent video viewing, illustration, photography, or night reading. The new screen is slightly larger on paper, but the difference is only 0.2 inch diagonally. Do not expect it to turn the mini into a full-size workspace.
Performance and storage choices
The A17 Pro iPad mini was already designed for Apple Intelligence and supports demanding iPad apps, drawing, and games. The new A20 Pro increases the available performance headroom, particularly for graphics and on-device AI work. Apple claims up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance and up to 2.7 times faster graphics in its selected tests against the prior mini. These are Apple test results, not independent benchmarks, and the difference in a reader's everyday apps may be smaller.
The exact new configuration also deserves attention. Apple's specifications list a five-core CPU and a 16-core Neural Engine for the 128GB and 256GB versions. The 512GB version has a six-core CPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. All three list a seven-core GPU. If a specific local AI or demanding creative task is the reason to upgrade, compare the storage tier as well as the model name. If you simply need more room for books, downloads, or photos, the storage amount itself may be the more relevant distinction.
Both generations were offered with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. A used 2024 mini with enough storage can be a better fit than a new 128GB unit that forces you to keep clearing space. Check how much space your apps and offline media already consume before choosing a capacity. Used prices vary with storage, cellular capability, condition, and included accessories, so compare actual listings rather than original launch prices alone.
Size, weight, and protection
The OLED mini is 5.4 mm thick and weighs 255 grams in the Wi-Fi version, according to Apple. The previous model is thicker and heavier. In a tablet this small, a modest reduction may be noticeable during long one-handed reading sessions, but a case can add back more weight than the device saves. If portability is your main criterion, compare the complete setup you will carry, including a cover and Pencil.
The 2026 mini also introduces an IP67 rating, tested under controlled laboratory conditions. That gives it a stated level of splash, water, and dust resistance that the A17 Pro mini does not advertise. It does not make the tablet waterproof. Apple notes that resistance is not permanent and may decrease through wear, and liquid damage is not covered by its warranty. For a used iPad, do not assume any resistance remains intact after damage or repair. Neither model should be deliberately exposed to water.
Cameras and video calls
The A17 Pro mini has a 12MP ultra-wide front camera with Center Stage on the short, portrait edge. The new mini moves its 12MP Center Stage front camera to the landscape edge. That puts the camera in a more natural position when the tablet is propped up horizontally for a call. If you routinely take video meetings with a folio stand, this may be more useful than a processor upgrade.
Both have a 12MP rear camera for casual photos and document capture. Apple's new announcement adds an Adaptive True Tone flash and describes improvements to document scanning. A phone will often remain a more convenient camera, but a mini can be useful for scanning forms or adding images directly to notes and field-work apps. The new Acoustic Display audio system is another hardware change; whether it is appreciably better for your use is best judged after the product ships.
Wi-Fi, cellular, and accessories
The 2024 mini supports Wi-Fi 6E. The new model adds Apple's N1 wireless chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. You do not need a Wi-Fi 7 router to use it, and a newer radio by itself will not fix a slow internet plan. The difference is more relevant if your network already supports Wi-Fi 7 or you keep a tablet for several years. Cellular versions of the new mini use Apple's C2 modem; Apple says it can deliver faster cellular data than the previous generation under its test conditions. Confirm carrier support and plan cost before paying extra for a cellular model. Our Wi-Fi versus cellular iPad guide walks through that decision.
Both the OLED and A17 Pro minis support Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), so an existing compatible Pencil may carry over. A case or folio is different: do not assume one designed for the old mini fits the new body, camera placement, or magnets. Check the accessory's stated model compatibility. Our iPad model identification guide can help when a used listing is unclear.
Compare available iPads
Browse iPads at The Mobile Base to compare the exact generation, storage, connectivity, condition, and included items on each available listing. A listing for an A17 Pro mini is not a listing for the newly announced OLED mini.
Check tablet accessories
See our tablet accessories if you need a cover, charging item, or other add-on. Verify compatibility with the precise iPad mini generation before ordering, particularly for cases and folios.
Which iPad mini should you choose?
Choose the OLED mini if its display, landscape camera, lower weight, stated water resistance, or extra performance will be used regularly and the total cost fits your budget. The A17 Pro mini remains a reasonable option for reading, notes, browsing, calls, and Pencil work when its screen and connectivity meet your needs. It already supports Apple Intelligence and the same current Pencil choices. For a used unit, condition and price can outweigh a specification difference that you will rarely notice.
Before buying either model, confirm the precise generation, storage, Wi-Fi or cellular version, and accessory compatibility. When buying used, also verify that it can be set up with your Apple Account and is not Activation Locked. Our Activation Lock guide covers that check. Once the OLED model becomes available on November 6, hands-on reviews and actual Canadian listing prices will make the value comparison more concrete.
